What is Moringa and how can it improve my health?

Moringa has grown substantially in popularity over the last couple of years and has now become one of the most sought after super-foods. If you haven’t added Moringa into your diet yet, you might be wondering what this wonder supplement can offer to your overall health.

Moringa has been used since ancient times in India and other parts of Asia to cure a myriad of health problems. Recently, it has started to become commercialised in modern medicine thanks to the popularity of the supplement, the fact that it is incredibly nutrient dense and that it can help you to feel better in a variety of different ways. In particular, Moringa helps to keep the cardiovascular and digestive systems in check and has also been proven to treat allergies. What is Moringa?

The scientific name for Moringa is Moringa Oleifera and it comes in the form of a small tree located in India and other parts of Asia, Africa and South America. Due to it’s popularity, Moringa has many names and is also known as the ‘Ben Oil’ Tree, ‘Drumstick’ Tree and ‘Horseradish’ Tree.

The Institute explained that the reason they awarded this title to Moringa was due to its increasing number of scientifically proven health benefits and the fact that every single part of the tree, including its bark, is edible (1).

Normally the leaves of the Moringa tree are dried up and then ground down into a powder that can be mixed into smoothies and other drinks, or even made into a tea of its own! You only require a surprisingly small amount of Moringa to get its incredible health benefits, usually only one or two spoonfuls.

As well as being a great supplement for any diet, it’s also being used to support the planet. Habitat conservationists have been planting and growing Moringa trees in areas that have been damaged by deforestation, where it helps to restore the forests and their soil back to health. On top of this, the tree also aids in water filtration, which is invaluable for people living in third world populations.


Exactly How Nutritious Is Moringa?

Moringa is more nutritious than a lot of household staples. Measured gram for gram, this super-food has 2 X as much protein as yoghurt, 7 X as much vitamin C as oranges and 4 X as much calcium as cow’s milk. That’s pretty nutritious! As well as this, it also contains a significant amount of vitamin A and potassium.

Moringa also contains a whopping 18 types of amino acids, eight of which are essential to your health and wellbeing. Furthermore, it is rish in flavonoids and EGCG (as found in Matcha Tea), which are both super – antioxidants that boost the immune system and promote overall health. EGCG can have positive weight loss and metabolism boosting effects.

One of the main reasons that Moringa is cherished and promoted everywhere is that it is just so nutrient dense. It’s actually one of the most nutritious super-foods in the world and is so nutritious that the World Health Organization gives it to people living in third world population to supplement their diets and give their nutrition a boost.

Moringa Oil and Skin Health

Another notable benefit of Moringa is that it is anti – bacterial and anti – fungal and can combat infections and harmful bacteria both internally and externally on the skin. These anti-inflammatory effects also make it a great treatment for acne. It can be used as a natural cure for Athlete’s foot.

A remarkable benefit to using it is that it is an astringent, which means that you can place some Moringa oil on a pimple and it will dry it out while leaving your skin moisturised. While Moringa leaves can offer you the most health benefits, they are not the most popular form of Moringa as they can have quite a strong taste.


The much more popular option is to get Moringa in an easy to take tablet or grab a bag of powdered Moringa which can be easily added to food, smoothies or tea.


Organic Moringa tea is increasingly popular and is an easy way to get all the health benefits of Moringa. Boiling the leaves is said to diminish the healing properties of Moringa somewhat, so you may want to let the water cool slightly before you pour yourself a cup of tea.


The seeds from the Moringa tree contain an especially high concentration of protein and taste a lot like pumpkin seeds when they are roasted. They can also be consumed fresh, like nuts, for a protein boost on the go.


Moringa oil (also known as Ben Oil) can be used topically to help fight acne or other skin issues.


As with other popular supplements, there are always companies out there who try to make a cheaper product by mixing it with synthetics. It goes without saying that if Moringa is mixed with a synthetic, it will be much less potent and will not offer as many health benefits. Pregnant women are advised against taking Moringa as it can cause the uterus to contract.
